Training for heating Technicians | OFTEC

OFTEC technician training

Not yet registered with OFTEC?

It is vital that heating technicians are properly trained for the work they carry out. OFTEC training and assessment is designed to provide confidence for the technician and peace of mind for customers but is also important for safety, environmental and economic reasons. Because of this, ensuring that technicians undertake appropriate training and assessment is central to OFTEC’s competent person registration scheme.

All OFTEC’s scopes of registration require technicians to demonstrate their competence. Applicants do this by providing evidence of the assessments they have successfully completed and by fulfilling OFTEC’s own inspection and scheme conditions. This is necessary when a heating technician first joins, but is also an ongoing requirement designed to ensure OFTEC registered technicians keep up to date with the latest industry developments.

Working with a wide range of organisations, OFTEC has developed assessment material for liquid fuel and solid fuel heating courses and these courses are UKAS accredited under ISO/IEC17024 - you can read more about the OFTEC courses on our training and assessments page. Training and assessment is delivered by our network of approved training centres throughout the UK and Ireland - many of who also offer a wide range of other courses such as unvented, water regs or heat pumps. Visit our find a training centre page to find an OFTEC training provider offering the course you require.

Please note that the qualifications we require vary, depending on the technology you wish to apply for - you can find out our entry requirements for each scope of registration by visiting the areas of registration page.

If you prefer, you can download our OFTEC approved training and assessment guide which is packed with details on training and registration for those new to the industry.

According to the rules of registration outlined in document R100, you should either hold a copy of the appropriate OFTEC technical books for the scopes you are registered with OFTEC for, or you can opt to hold the equivalent documents outlined on the downloadable list below:

Already registered with OFTEC?

It is important to maintain your qualifications and this includes keeping up to date with regulations and industry best practice by reading your monthly e-newsletter and quarterly Oil Installer magazine. Both of these contain technical updates and information. However, to maintain your OFTEC registration, you must resit your assessments every five years. It is usually possible for some courses to be combined where modules overlap. OFTEC works closely with a network of over 90 approved independent training providers throughout the UK and Ireland, to ensure that appropriate training is available throughout the year. For more information and to book your place please contact one of our approved centres using our online training centre and course search facility
