Households urged to avoid dangers of home heating DIY

Over 30% of consumers said when it comes to ticking off tasks on their to do lists, jobs around the home were the most important ahead of putting their finances in order (27%) and car servicing (16%)*.

In response OFTEC, the organisation which represents the oil heating industry and ran the survey, has highlighted the dangers of DIY heating fixes caused by homeowners trying to cut corners and not calling in an expert.

Bodged jobs such as accidently blocking up flues, incorrectly fitting new radiators and damaging boilers and oil tanks have all been cited by technicians as problems caused by customers attempting to repair their own heating systems.

Malcolm Farrow from OFTEC, said: “Summer is a popular time of year to reach for the toolbox and fix those long overdue odd jobs around the house. However, it’s important not to get carried away as there are certain repairs which really should be left to the experts.

“Modern heating systems are very complex and should not be tampered with unless you have proper training and experience. Our registered technicians often raise concerns over the number of DIY fixes they are called out to rectify which, if left unchecked, would have put households in potential danger.

“Risks include threat of fire, a fuel leak or even carbon monoxide poisoning which can be very difficult to detect. Using a qualified heating technician will give you complete peace of mind that any installation or maintenance work is completed safely. Remember, a bodged job is often far more expensive to repair than a quick fix by a professional.”

Households facing problems with their heating system are advised to always contact a local Gas Safe (for gas heating) or OFTEC (for heating oil and solid fuel) registered technician to deal with the issue professionally.
