OFTEC Registration - Who can register?

Whether you are working in the oilsolid fuel or renewables heating industry, OFTEC registration can bring several benefits to your business. It will demonstrate that you work to a high professional standard and, if you are an installer, you will be able to self-certify your own work. You can also take advantage of OFTEC’s other services including a company listing on the OFTEC website, free technical advice by phone and email, discounts from the OFTEC Direct shop and regular updates on industry developments.

So who is eligible to register with OFTEC?

OFTEC offers registration to technicians installing oil-fired heating and cooking appliances as well as systems providing central heating and hot water. Completing OFTEC registration demonstrates to the public that you have the necessary skills and training to complete work to the highest industry standard.

You can now also become an OFTEC registered technician for solid fuel, if you install solid fuel room heaters such as single or multi fuel wood burners; or for biomass, heat pump and solar thermal renewable systems. MCS registration is also available, which enables your customers to claim payments through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive.

Service Engineers: If you service oil-fired boilerssolid fuel wood burnersbiomass or renewable equipment it is recommended you complete OFTEC registration. Your company will then be listed on our website which will help people find your business when they look for a local OFTEC registered technician to service their heating system or repair their boiler if it breaks down. As an OFTEC technician you will also be able to display the OFTEC logo on your website and van which will demonstrate to the public you are registered with a competent person scheme. This provides reassurance to customers that the work completed will be carried out safely and professionally.

Electricians: OFTEC electrical Part P registration is specifically for oil heating technicians who are carrying out electrical installations and it enables you to self-certify your own work. You will also be listed on the Registered Competent Persons Electrical website which makes it easy for the public to find suitably qualified technicians.

Oil heating business managers and specifiers and trainers: OFTEC offers non-operative registration for people who work in the industry but do not install or service boilers. For example, if you manage a business, specify or price work, or are involved in relevant education and training. Having non-operative OFTEC registration means you can still enjoy many useful benefits including free technical advice, regular industry updates through our newsletters and discounts at the OFTEC Direct online store.

To become an OFTEC registered technician you need to have the correct qualifications and have undergone all the necessary training. This is available through OFTEC approved centres located across the country and the assessment will include written and practical tests. If you are joining OFTEC you need to register both your business and yourself as an individual technician.
