About works notification

About works notification

Current building regulations for England, Wales, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands require local authority building control to be notified when heating installation work is undertaken. As an OFTEC registered technician you can self-certify your works.

As part of your registration you have access to OFTEC’s works notification system which costs £3.50 + VAT per job.  You must notify OFTEC within 21 days of the completion date of the works which enables OFTEC to submit the information to the local authority in the 30-day period allowed for self-certification. We automatically inform the appropriate local authority building control department and send the householder/landlord a building regulations compliance certificate. A certificate of compliance is to confirm that the work has been undertaken by a competent person and that it complies with the building regulations.

Since February 2016, installations notified through the OFTEC portal are covered by a workmanship warranty through OFTEC. We will send a warranty certificate with details of the cover direct to the customer.

Where an email address is provided for your customer, the certificate/workmanship warranty will be emailed to them directly next day. If no email is provided then this is sent by post and we advise this may take up to 2 weeks to arrive.

OFTEC Information Sheet- How to complete a works notification

The types of installations to notify include:

  • Oil boiler or cooker installations
  • Tank and supply installations
  • Unvented hotwater cylinders
  • Solid fuel installations
  • Heating and hot water installations
  • Heat pump installations
  • Solar thermal installations
  • Biomass installations
  • Electrical work covered by Part P

Alternatives to online notification

The only alternative means of compliance is to arrange a Local Authority Building Control (LABC) inspection for any works subject to building regulations – which can be extremely costly and time consuming as they need to supervise the works from start to finish.

Requesting a copy certificate

Once LABC has been notified, a link will appear against each notification record on your OFTEC Portal account. When you click on this link it prompts you to enter an email address, this can be your business email, or you can email a copy directly to your customer.
