With National Heat Pump Week (12th-16th October 2026) upon us, it's a great opportunity to explore how heat pump training can help grow your business and expand your skillset.
As the heating industry evolves, many technicians are considering how they can adapt their skills to meet changing customer needs. For many, that means expanding into the heat pump market.
Developing heat pump skills can help you:
Win more work.
Meet growing demand for low-carbon heating solutions.
Broaden the services you offer.
Future proof your business.
Demonstrate your commitment to professional development.
It's not about leaving liquid fuel behind. It's about adding another string to your bow. Many businesses are choosing to offer a mix of technologies, enabling them to meet a wider range of customer needs.
Heat pump skills are already growing
Heat pump training is becoming an increasingly popular choice for heating professionals looking to broaden their expertise.
To date, 5,298 candidates have completed OFTEC heat pump training courses, while 584 existing businesses are now registered in renewables. 74 businesses have also registered with OFTEC solely in renewable technology.
These figures highlight the growing number of technicians who are developing their skills to meet evolving customer needs while maintaining high industry standards.
Building on existing expertise
Taking on a new area of training may seem daunting, but many of the principles involved in heat pump systems will already be familiar to experienced heating technicians. From system design and commissioning to controls and fault-finding, much of your existing knowledge provides a strong foundation, so you're not starting from scratch.
OFTEC training programmes are designed to build on that existing expertise, introducing the additional principles and considerations associated with heat pump systems.
OFTEC offers three heat pump training courses:
OFT21-504A - Installation, commissioning and servicing of air source heat pumps
OFT21-504G - Installation, commissioning and servicing of ground source heat pumps
OFT21-504D - Design of Heat Pump systems
Looking ahead
For technicians considering their next step, heat pumps offer an opportunity to broaden their expertise, increase the services they provide and access new business opportunities, all while building on the skills they already have.
