Flue gas analyser - winter maintenance

As we head into the colder months, you’re likely to see an increase in calls from consumers looking to have their heating systems serviced. To carry out a thorough and accurate service, it's important that your flue gas analyser and other test instruments are working correctly.

Here are five tips to help keep your analyser in good condition during the busy autumn and winter period:

1. Vehicle storage

To avoid the risk of the analysers probe becoming damaged by condensation or freezing, do not to leave it in your van overnight when temperatures are close to or below freezing. Storing your equipment in a dry, temperature-controlled environment can help protect sensitive components and improve its lifespan.

2. Calibration

If you haven't already done so this year, it's advisable to book your analyser in for calibration before its current certification expires. Always keep a copy of the calibration certificate or receipt as evidence that the instrument has been tested and set up correctly.

3. Moisture

High humidity and moisture levels can be damaging to sensitive test equipment. If you notice your analyser is showing signs of water ingress or condensation inside it, it should be dried out immediately and cleaned to reduce the risk of affecting its performance or calibration. Some models are fitted with condensation traps, which should be emptied and cleaned regularly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Filters

While important at all times of the year, technicians should be especially careful during the colder months when analysers may be exposed to more moisture. Check filters regularly and replace them when necessary to avoid inaccurate readings, equipment damage and unnecessary downtime.

5. Startup and purge

Finally, remember that a flue gas analyser should only be turned on and off in clean, fresh air, to allow it to purge contaminants. This is especially important during the wet and colder months as the increase in humidity can affect performance and sensor accuracy.
