Boiler Scrappage Scheme for Oil Boilers in England
(Greener Boiler Initiative)
What is it?
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme was announced in the Chancellor’s pre-budget report .This scheme will provide £400 per household to help up to 125,000 households upgrade their boiler. This will be available to those people in England who replace a G rated boiler with a more efficient A rated
boiler. A detailed description of the scheme can be found on the EST website.
What are the benefits of upgrading my boiler?
Boilers which have a rating of ‘G’ are the least efficient boilers. This means that you get less heat for the fuel that you burn. G rated oil boilers have a seasonal efficiency of 70% or less, whereas high efficiency condensing A rated oil boilers have a seasonal efficiency of 90% or more. Put another way, if you are using a G rated boiler you could be wasting over 20% of the oil that you burn.
How will I receive the money?
How end users will receive scrappage scheme money has not been decided yet. The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) are going to work with the industry in early 2010 to decide this, and the scheme is due to be in place by March 2010. Further details will be sent out by OFTEC in January 2010

How will it work?
• The scheme will be administered by the Energy Savings Trust (EST)
• Householders (including private landlords) will identify that they have an eligible boiler. This must be a working Band G or equivalent boiler (gas, LPG or oil)
• Householder will then need to obtain a quotation from an installer registered with a Competent Persons Scheme
• Householder applies to the Energy Saving Trust who will issue a voucher
• Householder arranges for the boiler to be replaced with either a Band A boiler or a renewable heating system
• On completion of the work householder sends proof of installation of new system to the Energy Saving Trust along with a declaration about the boiler that has been replaced,
signed by both themselves and the installer
• Energy Saving Trust will process payment of the grant
